Mechanism of photo-ionic stoichiometry changes in SrTiO3

The impact of UV light (? = 365 nm) on defect chemistry and composition undoped SrTiO3 single crystals was investigated by means impedance spectroscopy. In-plane conductivity measurements between 280 450 °C in air reveal a drastic increase the bulk upon illumination. measured time dependence this is accordance with oxygen chemical diffusion SrTiO3. corresponding photo-induced change concentrations caused being pumped from gas phase into oxide under irradiation. This affects entire crystal rather than only thin absorption zone leads to very high potentials nominal pressures up 106 bar. After switching off, resulting relaxes extremely slowly due slow surface exchange kinetics. A mechanistic model introduced explain potential as well vacancy hole/electron semiconducting oxides, here based formation quasi-chemical illuminated region. It discussed how interplay four kinetic parameters causes observed time-dependent stoichiometry thus changes.
